It’s another week of the Uefa Champions League, and this week see some teams confirmed through to the next round.
Rennes VS Chelsea
Olivier Giroud powered in a stoppage-time header as Chelsea beat Rennes 2-1 to book a place in the last 16 of the Champions League with two games to spare.
Frank Lampard’s side won the reverse fixture 3-0 earlier this month but they were made to work a lot harder for Tuesday’s victory, they are sixth in a row in all competitions.
Serhou Guirassy looked to have rescued a point for Rennes when he cancelled out Callum Hudson-Odoi’s first-half opener in the 85th minute at Roazhon Park.
But second-half substitute Giroud won it in added time to ensure Chelsea will progress from Group E along with Sevilla.
Dynamo Kyiv VS Barcelona
Barcelona made it four wins out of four Champions League games with victory over Dynamo Kyiv thanks to Martin Braithwaite’s brace.
Martin Braithwaite scored twice as Barcelona eased to a 4-0 victory over Dynamo Kyiv in Champions League Group G on Tuesday.
After an underwhelming first-half display, Ronald Koeman’s side took the lead early in the second period with a fine finish from Sergino Dest.
Braithwaite netted his first goal in Europe for Barca with a close-range finish from a corner before he added his second of the game from the penalty spot.
Substitute Antoine Griezmann put the gloss on the win in injury time with a clinical finish from the inside the box as Barca booked a place in the last 16 for the 17th season in a row.
Inter Milan VS Real Madrid
Eden Hazard scored from the penalty spot and substitute Rodrygo added a second as Real Madrid beat Inter 2-0 in the Champions League.
Inter are on the verge of exiting the Champions League after 2-0 loss to Real Madrid in Wednesday’s clash at San Siro.
Madrid won the reverse fixture 3-2 earlier this month to revive their Group B campaign and they made a strong start to what was the first meeting between these sides at Inter’s iconic ground since 1998.
Eden Hazard converted an early penalty – his first goal in the competition in three years – and Inter’s task was made all the more difficult when Arturo Vidal was sent off for dissent with 33 minutes played.
Madrid added a second goal through substitute Rodrygo’s volley to move a point behind Borussia Monchengladbach in second, with Inter five points worse off in fourth heading into the final two rounds of fixtures.
Liverpool VS Atalanta
Liverpool lost at home to an Atalanta side they routed just three weeks earlier on a dismal night for Jurgen Klopp’s men at Anfield.
Liverpool missed the chance to secure their place in the Champions League knockout stage as they slipped to a shock 2-0 defeat to Atalanta.
Having seen Liverpool beat Atalanta 5-0 in Bergamo on November 3, Jurgen Klopp selected a blend of fringe players and first-team regulars in his starting line-up and paid the price as the Premier League champions failed to muster a shot on goal until the 44th minute.
It got worse for Liverpool after half-time as Gian Piero Gasperini’s well-organised Atalanta side scored in quick succession through Josip Ilicic and Robin Gosens on Wednesday.
On a night when victory would have qualified Liverpool from Group D with a 100 per cent record, the standings are instead tightly balanced with Klopp’s team just two points clear of Ajax and Atalanta, who both have seven.
Qualified teams
Chelsea, Sevilla, Barcelona, Juventus, Bayern Munich and Manchester City have all booked a place in the round of 16. The round of 16 draw will be held on Monday, December 14 in Nyon at 11am.
The ties will take place over two legs, with seeded group winners playing away in the first legs on February 15 and 16, and at home in the return matches on March 16 and 17.
